Lower School classes are busy learning outside of the classroom by taking advantage of local community resources to enhance the educational experience.

Today, the TK class visited Maple View Farms. They learned about farm animals, dairy production, signs of fall and the life cycle of a pumpkin by visiting the barn yard, milking station and learning classrooms. Kindergartners will also visit Maple View Farms in November.

Also in November, 1st Graders will go to Mr. B’s Garden Center in Mebane. The class will look at various types of rocks and discuss their formation. Students will also pan for gemstones.

“Are we still in North Carolina?” wondered a 2nd grader after an hour trek to the Greensboro Science Center last month. The class had an incredible time touching a domestic ferret and cornsnake, learning about animal survival and weather and seeing a gibbon pee and poop from 40 feet in the air. Another highlight came at the end of the trip when they were evacuated for a fire (it ended up being a false alarm) and got to watch the fire truck come.

Later this month, 3rd graders will visit the Eno River for two Schoolhouse of Wonder classes: “Native Ways” and “Early American Life.” Throughout the day, students will become Piedmont pioneers, learning about cooking, medicine, work and play during these time periods. They will churn butter, track animas, and strike a flint and steel fire!

Ms. Tedeschi coordinated an author visit that took place today for 4th-6th graders. Bestselling author Rohan Gavin spoke about his new book, Knightley & Son series: 3 of A Kind, answered questions and signed pre-ordered books. This mystery series is recommended for ages 10 and up. Next week, 5th grade is also heading to the Schoolhouse of Wonder for some outdoor activities related to Native American life and Early Settlers. This week, 5th graders have been sharing their Heritage Projects and will celebrate their various backgrounds this weekend at their Heritage Potluck Dinner!
