The first few weeks of 2015 have brought a wave of winter weather, and Triangle Day School experienced its first delay due to inclement weather. This week, 3rd-5th grade Lower School students also experienced a special visit from Mike Maze, a meteorologist from WRAL.
Maze spoke to students Monday morning, sharing with them a typical day in the life of a meteorologist and a deeper look into meteorology. He begins each morning by looking out the window and predicting what the forecast may entail.
Maze showed students various types of maps including satellite and radar maps. He gave them a chance to focus on the Durham area and see what weather patterns were happening at that moment, as well as what was predicted to come. Maze showed the freezing precipitation that traveled through the Durham area last night, and he correctly predicted that the TDS school day would be affected by the precipitation.
The visit concluded with a Q&A session in which students had a chance to learn more about weather and meteorology and about Maze. He has a passion for visiting schools to share about his career, as well as hearing from students about their curiosity and interest in weather. Perhaps TDS will produce some future meteorologists one day!
