The final days before Winter Break are exciting ones in Lower School. They are filled with art projects and sing-alongs, pajama days and tasty treats. We explore holiday celebrations, design ugly sweaters, create free-standing “geobread” houses, and leave winter snacks for our feathered friends.

Before we scatter to our celebrations and relaxing times with our family and friends, we wanted to share with you some of the best moments of 2019 and our most anticipated events of the year to come.

Highlights of 2019
TK went exploring in Downtown Durham, learned about each others’ families and traditions, and enjoyed spending time with their Buddies.
Kindergarten got to visit Maple View Farms, had many fantastic Mystery Readers, and made excellent progress on their reading and writing work.
First graders have worked hard on a variety of writings – narratives, nonfiction chapter books, and fantasies! We also enjoyed seeing the Paperhand Puppet Intervention perform at the Carolina Theatre.
Second grade has enjoyed learning about money in Math and economics in Social Studies. With those combined, students were able to participate in “Market Day.” The children created a good or service to sell to other 2nd graders. The students then earned tickets to shop with based on their classroom behavior and participation. It was quite a success!
Third graders have become reading workshop masters this year, and their teachers are so proud of the deep readers and thinkers the students are becoming! Our field trip to the Carolina Tiger Rescue was also a definite highlight.
Fourth grade loved sluicing and creeking during our trip to the Emerald Hollow Mine. Cheering on Chloe in The Nutcracker was definitely a highlight, and building our geobread houses was amazing too!
Fifth grade enjoyed planning, creating, and presenting their GFGA projects, the trivia competition, and their Schoolhouse of Wonder field trip!
Hopes & Dreams for 2020

TK will be going to a play in Raleigh and visiting Marbles Kids Museum.

Kindergarten will be having fun at Bull City Gymnastics and their Kindergarten Celebration.

First grade is looking forward to writing celebrations to share their stories with parents and friends. They will also visit the North Carolina Botanical Garden and the Scrap Exchange.

Second grade is looking forward to more field trips that connect with the Social Studies curriculum, finishing up diary writing, and presenting at the Regulator Bookstore!

Third graders will all be choosing one word to focus on in 2020. They’ll also revisit our hopes and dreams from the beginning of the year, to check in on their progress!

Fourth grade can’t wait for their beach trip or the musical with the fifth graders!

Fifth grade has their fantasy reading and writing units, family heritage projects, roller coaster projects, and the GFGA to Chattanooga on the horizon!

Thank you for sharing your year with us. Have a restful, restorative Winter Break. We can’t wait to see you back at TDS on January 6, 2020!
