Position Overview

The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging will be responsible for leading and advancing the school’s mission, with a focus on fostering a culture of inclusivity across all aspects of school life. They will partner with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents to implement and sustain programs and practices that promote a welcoming, just, and supportive environment for all members of our school community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the school’s vision for diversity, equity, and belonging
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of diverse students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Coordinate and lead school community groups, including affinity groups, book clubs, community councils, and community celebrations
  • Ensure that the principles of diversity, equity, and belonging are woven into the school’s academic and extracurricular programs, including curriculum development, professional development, student activities, and community-building efforts
  • Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to deepen understanding of cultural competency, unconscious bias, anti-racism, inclusive teaching practices, and community engagement
  • Work with student leaders and organizations to empower students to take an active role in fostering a culture of belonging
  • Engage with families to promote dialogue and understanding to build partnerships between home and school
  • Monitor the climate of the school and use data to create actionable plans to address issues of inequity, exclusion, or discrimination
  • Support teachers and other administrators in disciplinary situations related to violations of our diversity, equity, and belonging principles
  • Partner with other independent school leaders and local organizations, forming and maintaining community partnerships that strengthen our commitment to this work

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Master’s degree in education, social justice, or a related field is preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a leadership role focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, preferably in a K-12 school setting
  • Proven experience designing and leading initiatives related to diversity, equity, and belonging
  • Strong understanding of issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and disability within the context of a TK-8 school environment

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to lead with empathy, integrity, and cultural competence
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and work collaboratively across departments
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex and sensitive issues
  • Special event planning, communication, and coordination
