You can’t miss the new TDS garden since it is located right across from the Lower School playground! TDS faculty hammered together the wood frames. Middle School students hauled soil and filled our six new raised beds. Each grade in the Lower School will “own” and care for a garden bed for the year. It’s truly an all-school collaborative effort!
Here’s how the garden will be distributed:
• Bed 1 – 4th and 5th grades
• Bed 2 – 3rd grade
• Bed 3 – 1st grade
• Bed 4 – Kindergarten
• Bed 5 – TK and 2nd grades
• Bed 6 – After School Enrichment Program
Throughout the year, Middle School students will participate and help out with the garden as a whole during their monthly “zones” on-campus service activities. Each class group will operate autonomously, free to manage the planting and upkeep of their own bed. Many parents have expressed interest in participating as well.
Next Steps
– Garden Signs: The TK class will make these for each garden bed from recycled art (bottle caps and other salvaged materials).
– Seeds and Bulbs: It’s time to plant veggies and over-wintering bulbs. We’re well into the fall planting season. The time to plant the final run of fall veggies is right now. Some quick –
growing and hardy varieties we wil choose from are radish, lettuce, spinach, arugula, and
kale. It’s also time to plant over-wintering flower and garlic bulbs.
Stop by and check out the garden next time you are on campus!
