“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that can learn, the more places you’ll go.” Deputy Hamlet, a resource officer, shared these words from Dr. Seuss with third graders this week as a part of the Read with a Blue Devil program. She spoke about making good decisions and how to become a student-athlete, emphasizing that school is number one, and you should strive to get good grades if you want to compete in sports. Reading is the key. In order to achieve this goal, she encouraged the class to develop a love of reading.
Deputy Hamlet accompanied Megan Clark, a junior pole-vaulter at Duke University and member of the track team. She shared with the class that her best jump is currently 14 feet 9 inches. Students had a chance to ask Megan questions about being a student-athlete. She is a psychology major, with minors in biology and chemistry, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Megan discussed a typical day as a student athlete, which includes lifting weights, eating breakfast with her friends, going to classes, attending practice, and completing homework. She said as a child she loved science and chemistry the most, and her favorite complement class was Spanish. She also loved the Harry Potter series and The Series of Unfortunate Events. Megan ended her visit by reading a couple of books.
Earlier this year, soccer and basketball players at Duke University – including Grayson Allen! – visited and read with the 3rd graders. On April 23rd, 3rd graders who have made it to Level 8 in the RWBD program are invited to a special Men’s Basketball Awards Show. Awesome job to all third graders who participated in this reading incentive program this year!
