The middle schoolers have been learning about service learning this week! We have discussed different types of projects they could complete, from direct, person-to-person service learning projects like serving food in a homeless shelter to advocacy and research based projects like conducting a public information campaign. Students also read about some real-world examples from other schools and kids their age.

In the coming week, middle schoolers will take a survey about what causes they are most passionate about or problems they are interested in tackling. We have students reflect on the following questions: “What problems do you see in your town, state, or country? What things do you wish were different in your community? In our school?”

Once students have completed this survey, they will be grouped based on common interests. When we return from winter break, students will meet weekly with their community service group and a faculty advisor to design a service learning project. We’re excited to see what they come up with!
