Welcome to the 2019 TDS Summer Programs Week 7 workshop list!

Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

Woodland Creatures (4-5)

There are so many furry and feathery friends right in our own backyards. Together we will learn each day about a different woodland creature. Once we’ve learned some fun facts about our animal of the day we will create a craft showcasing our newfound knowledge. Let’s explore the animal world together!

Tiffany graduated with a Master’s in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this past school year she served as Kindergarten Assistant as well as After School Counselor and interim After School Director at TDS. In her free time Tiffany loves to read books like Harry Potter, watch Disney movies, and play Pokemon. She is looking forward to learning, playing, and growing with friends this Summer!

LEGO Challenge(5-7)

LEGO® enthusiasts unite! In this workshop we will use our creativity to complete daily challenges, as well as build various LEGO® creations. Your child will be introduced to beginning concepts in engineering and architecture, what shapes are the strongest to build with, and gain valuable teamwork skills with their classmates.Maybe we’ll create a town, construct a marble run, engineer with LEGO® and water, or build something that interests you. There’s no right or wrong, only fun!

Kyara Kimber has been part of the TDS community for three years as an after school counselor. A resident of Mebane, she is studying Criminal Justice and will be attending North Carolina Central University to further her degree this summer. Her goal is to share her passion and become a Criminal Justice professor. In her spare time Kyara likes to sing, play guitar, and help at risk youth in her community. She is eager to expand her role at TDS leading several camps this summer.

Forts & Hideouts (5-7)

Take your blanket fort building skills to the next level! You will explore using recycled and natural materials and discover what type of knot is the best to build forts and hideouts. We’ll explore structural integrity in the classroom with hands on activities and then take our skills into the wild. A field trip into nearby wooded parks will put our fort building to the test.

Cooking (7-9)

Don’t you wish you could make yourself exactly what you want for every meal? Let’s put aside the chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, or stop saying “not again” to what our parents make and dive into all of our kitchen’s possibilities ourselves! We’ll have fun, try to eat healthy, develop or hone our cooking skills, experiment in the kitchen, improve math and reading skills .. all in an engaging way, while expanding our culinary palates. Some of the activities included are: cooking, baking, outdoor play, arts & crafts and much more.

Oriental Art (7-9)

This workshop will feature a variety of fun, cultural experiences! We will create artwork that includes Chinese Brush Painting techniques, Manga drawing and a “painting field trip” to Duke Garden’s Oriental section. The Campers will be inspired to create their beautiful artwork while listening to stories and music from various cultures.

Fencing, Fitness, & Strategy Games (8-12)

Instructor: Darius Wei
Ages: 8-12

Discover movement through the ancient art and Olympic sport of fencing! We’ll explore how technique and creativity combine to develop new athletic skills. In addition, we’ll look at problem solving and competition through strategic game play, both in the gym and out.

Darius Wei is the assistant fencing coach for the Duke University team (2018 ACC Champions!!) and head coach at Research Triangle Fencing in Durham.

Nutty Noggins (8-12)

Instructor: Rebecca Fensholt
Ages: 8-12

Campers will spend the week learning about brains! We’ll build brains, look at brains in other animals, play brain games like “synaptic tag,” and possibly take a field trip to the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences!
Tentative Schedule:
Day 1: Model neurons and model brains; outdoor brain games
Day 2: Explore senses and reflexes
Day 3: Brains of other animals
Day 4: Field trip – Duke Institute for Brain Sciences
Day 5: Artificial and Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Rebecca Fensholt is a philosophy lecturer who also works as a substitute teacher at TDS. She loves hiking with her dogs, experimenting with cooking, teaching, and learning!
