Welcome to the 2019 TDS Summer Programs Week 6 workshop list!

Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

Lil' Builders (4-5)

Instructor: Jordan Qualls
Ages: 4-5

What could be more fun than building with blocks? Building with BIG blocks! In this camp, your child will enjoy designing and destroying towers using big blocks, cups, big Legos, and jumbo marshmallows. We will build and test bridges and compete in friendly competitions to see which designs can hold toy boats, cars, people, and more. Your child will engage in problem solving activities with peers along with other activities such as building his/her name with everyday materials.

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher, and now as a summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 9 and 11 years old.

Zany Zoologists (5-7) *FULL*

Do you like to care for animals or have a passion for life science? In this camp, you will become zoologists for a week! Each day, we will explore Durham while learning about different creatures! At the end of the week, we will work together to compile an encyclopedia of local biological life.
Tentative schedule:
Day 1: Entomology (Insects) – Eno River hike
Day 2: Ornithology (Birds) – Wild Bird Center
Day 3: Herpetology (Reptiles) – Piedmont Wildlife Center
Day 4: Mammalogy (Mammals) – Duke Lemur Center or Brightleaf Stables
Day 5: Encyclopedia workshop

Rebecca Fensholt is a philosophy lecturer who also works as a substitute teacher at TDS. She loves hiking with her dogs, experimenting with cooking, teaching, and learning!

Backyard Adventures (5-7)

Instructor: Kyara Kimber
Ages: 5-7

Let’s explore the amazing wilderness our backyard has to offer! We will hike nearby trails -including our beautiful Eno River, discover the wildlife and plants in our area, build forts and shelters to protect us from the elements, and more! Join Kyara on an amazing outdoor adventure!

Kyara Kimber has been part of the TDS community for three years as an after school counselor. A resident of Mebane, she is studying Criminal Justice and will be attending North Carolina Central University to further her degree this summer. Her goal is to share her passion and become a Criminal Justice professor. In her spare time Kyara likes to sing, play guitar, and help at risk youth in her community. She is eager to expand her role at TDS leading several camps this summer.

Artsy Endeavors (7-9)

Let’s get messy! In this camp we will be focusing on paper mache. Together we will explore what is needed to shape a base, how to create paper mache paste, and the best practices in applying paper mache. Once our projects have dried and set it’s time to paint! We will learn about color theory and how to create different colors by mixing paints. By the end of the week we will have solely student created works of art to share with you. Please join us in this artsy endeavor!

Tiffany graduated with a Master’s in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this past school year she served as Kindergarten Assistant as well as After School Counselor and interim After School Director at TDS. In her free time Tiffany loves to read books like Harry Potter, watch Disney movies, and play Pokemon. She is looking forward to learning, playing, and growing with friends this Summer!

Grossology II (7-9)

Did you know the greater short horned lizard shoots blood out of its eyes? Or, that your belly button contains about 70 different species of bacteria? Get ready to get down and dirty during an enlightening, yet icky adventure as we investigate all things grossly fascinating in the animal kingdom and human body.

Cooking (8-12)

Instructor: Amie Tedeschi

Don’t you wish you could make yourself exactly what you want for every meal? Let’s put aside the chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, or stop saying “not again” to what our parents make and dive into all of our kitchen’s possibilities ourselves! We’ll have fun, try to eat healthy, develop or hone our cooking skills, experiment in the kitchen, improve math and reading skills .. all in an engaging way, while expanding our culinary palates. Some of the activities included are: cooking, baking, outdoor play, arts & crafts and much more.

Graphic Novelists (8-12)

Instructor: Cindy Lucas
Ages: 8-12

Do you enjoy reading Dogman’s adventures, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or other exciting graphic novels? In this camp you will learn artistic and writing techniques to create your own graphic novel! You will discover how to develop character sketches, create an exciting plot, design a beautiful cover and put it all together into a ‘self-published” work of art! You’re sure to improve your drawing skills and to be able to see first hand that a picture can indeed “tell a story!” You can prepare for this camp by thinking about your characters and plot prior to the first day of camp (not required).
