Welcome to the 2019 TDS Summer Programs Week 5 workshop list!

Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

Gnomes, Fairies & Gardens (4-5)

Instructor: Jordan Qualls

Ever wonder what it would be like to live under the warm soil in a garden? To be the guardian of a flower while it grows? Your child’s imagination will run wild in this creative, earth focused camp. Fairies are a great source of inspiration for children to connect with the outside world. Come explore the TDS garden with us and help us create gnomes and fairy houses to help protect our plants as they grow!

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher, and now as a summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 9 and 11 years old.

Crafty Kids (5-7)

Let’s get crafty! This week will get creative with our hands by using clay to make pottery. The kids will learn to make vases, cups, plates, bowls, or any animal of their choice. They will also have the option to paint their craft as well! Other activities include paper crafts, perler beads, and more!

Kyara Kimber has been part of the TDS community for three years as an after school counselor. A resident of Mebane, she is studying Criminal Justice and will be attending North Carolina Central University to further her degree this summer. Her goal is to share her passion and become a Criminal Justice professor. In her spare time Kyara likes to sing, play guitar, and help at risk youth in her community. She is eager to expand her role at TDS leading several camps this summer.

Sports Shenanigans (5-7)

Instructor: Zachary Keesee
Ages: 5-7

Join your friends in having an awesome time playing various versions of your favorite sports. We will create our own rules and games for different sports and get a chance to compete and have fun with our friends! We will explore various sports games involving soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, frisbee, hockey and whatever your imagination can come up with!

Zachary is a Durham native and TDS lifer. He is currently attending NC State’s computer and electrical engineering program. Zachary loves spending his free time outdoors playing soccer, basketball and computer games.

Nature Quest (7-9)

Let’s explore the amazing wilderness nature has to offer! We will hike nearby trails -including our beautiful Eno River, discover the wildlife and plants in our area, build forts and shelters to protect us from the elements, and more! Join Morgan on an amazing outdoor adventure!

Morgan Whithaus will be graduating from Meredith College with a degree in elementary education and Spanish. While in high school and college, Morgan served as a summer counselor for various camps, and she has been a Girl Scout since the age of five. During her time in Girl Scouts, Morgan earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and took advantage of many opportunities to develop leadership skills and experience. She is looking forward to taking her students on nature expeditions and quests throughout the Triangle.

Cooking (7-9)

Instructor: Dr. Jenny Howell

Food Network, here we come! Let’s try new foods and learn some independence in the kitchen while using math skills such as measuring, fractions, and time. We’ll even create a recipe book to bring home.

Jenny has worked educating children in many forms over the past 23 years; classroom teacher, parent, tutor, and interventionist. Jenny specialized in literacy development and earned a PhD from the University of Virginia and is currently a third grade teacher at TDS. The children may pass along stories about her playful labradors, Sunny and Dock. Jenny is leading several camps this summer and especially loves being in the kitchen and making crafts.

Extreme Steam (8-12)

Welcome Extreme STEAMers! You will generate your own ideas and projects, can choose to work in teams and independently, and participate in daily design challenges. Some activities will include Genius Hour, maker space, and much more! Each day you will bring home new experiences that you can use for the rest of your life! We will choose themes for our projects as a group based on your passions and interest. Time to put our imaginations, creativity, and experience to work!

Mystery: Unlocked (8-12)

Instructor: Rebecca Fensholt
Ages: 8-12
Session: July 15-19

Have you ever immersed yourself in a real-life adventure game full of intriguing puzzles and mind twisting clues? Now you have the opportunity to dive into five mind-blowing episodes that will challenge you in a unique way. Campers will solve mysteries based on a theme of the day by working together on logic puzzles. Even though these games and puzzles may be challenging, don’t fret, you’ll have fun!

Rebecca Fensholt is a philosophy lecturer who also works as a substitute teacher at TDS. She loves hiking with her dogs, experimenting with cooking, teaching, and learning!
