Welcome to the 2019 TDS Summer Programs Week 3 workshop list!

Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

A Patriotic Twist (4-5)

Time to celebrate our nation! Your instructor will show you how to make a crafty American Flag, teach you patriotic songs, including the Star Spangled Banner, and guide you through more crafty fun to celebrate the 4th of July. We’ll head outdoors for some backyard fun with patriotic sprinklers, sidewalk chalk, and maybe even a patriotic parade showcasing all of our masterpieces this week!

Shipwrecked Madness (5-7)

Ahoy, Matey! This week, we will venture onto an uncharted island where we will search for “treasure” using treasure maps we have created for each other or possibly send out kind messages in a bottle. We’ll bake some island style treats, discover navigational techniques, read stories about famous pirates, and much more! Join our fun with the shipwrecked crew!

Jesa Rae is a visual artist with an inquiry-based, playful approach to art integrated education. She received her BFA from Columbia College Chicago, where her passion for arts education allowed her to delve into a wide variety of artistic mediums, study child development, and connect with the Reggio Emilia approach. Jesa Rae has worked with children for over fifteen years as a nanny, has partnered with social justice organizations to bring arts workshops to children in Chicago, and was a lead teacher and program director at a community arts center in Minneapolis. Locally, she has worked as an arts educator with a number of organizations in Durham, including the Durham Arts Council, Durham Public Schools, and The Scrap Exchange.
Outside of school, Jesa Rae can be found in her vegetable garden, traveling or hiking with her partner and puppy, or in her studio working on a children’s book about a little girl who plants a magical garden in her bedroom with the sounds she collects from the city.

Nature Quest (5-7)

Let’s explore the amazing wilderness nature has to offer! We will hike nearby trails -including our beautiful Eno River, discover the wildlife and plants in our area, build forts and shelters to protect us from the elements, and more! Join Kyara on an amazing outdoor adventure!

Kyara Kimber has been part of the TDS community for three years as an after school counselor. A resident of Mebane, she is studying Criminal Justice and will be attending North Carolina Central University to further her degree this summer. Her goal is to share her passion and become a Criminal Justice professor. In her spare time Kyara likes to sing, play guitar, and help at risk youth in her community. She is eager to expand her role at TDS leading several camps this summer.

Crafty Creators (7-9)

Calling Kid Crafters! Come make some beautiful – and sometimes wearable – crafts! We will work with a wide variety of materials: beads, corks, shaving cream, and gems to name a few. May include a trip to a pottery painting studio or firing of our own clay objects.

Jenny has worked educating children in many forms over the past 23 years; classroom teacher, parent, tutor, and interventionist. Jenny specialized in literacy development and earned a PhD from the University of Virginia and is currently a third grade teacher at TDS. The children may pass along stories about her playful labradors, Sunny and Dock. Jenny is leading several camps this summer and especially loves being in the kitchen and making crafts.

Cooking (7-9)

Don’t you wish you could make yourself exactly what you want for every meal? Let’s put aside the chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, or stop saying “not again” to what our parents make and dive into all of our kitchen’s possibilities ourselves! We’ll have fun, try to eat healthy, develop or hone our cooking skills, experiment in the kitchen, improve math and reading skills .. all in an engaging way, while expanding our culinary palates. Some of the activities included are: cooking, baking, outdoor play, arts & crafts and much more.

Creative Coders (8-12)

Sports & Strategy Games (8-12)

This camp will help children understand how to work together while learning how to use their bodies and minds productively and strategically. They will play and learn sports and games that that are new, but also some that may be familiar to them, like Capture the Flag, Fort Crasher, dominoes, various sports, and more!

Steven Mercado is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Bank Street College (M.Ed.).Steven is a second grade teacher and Middle School boys basketball assistant coach at TDS. He is eager to prepare our younger athletes for middle school and high school sports.
