Welcome to the 2019 TDS Summer Programs Week 2 workshop list!

Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

Tinker Thinkers (4-5)

Instructor: Jordan Qualls

Have a creative kiddo who loves to make, create, and tinker with everything in the house? Bring them to play with magnets, screws, and legos. We will use our imagination to create new things in new ways. Your child will make a new house for the three little pigs, learn to use tools, and work together to create a Rube Goldberg machine. Think like a tinker!

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher, and now as a summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 9 and 11 years old.

LEGO Challenge (5-7)

LEGO® enthusiasts unite! In this workshop we will use our creativity to complete daily challenges, as well as build various LEGO® creations. Your child will be introduced to beginning concepts in engineering and architecture, what shapes are the strongest to build with, and gain valuable teamwork skills with their classmates.Maybe we’ll create a town, construct a marble run, engineer with LEGO® and water, or build something that interests you. There’s no right or wrong, only fun!

Bianca was born and raised in Durham, NC and is a second grade teacher at TDS. She is thrilled to be working with our future leaders this summer. She loves incorporating hands on activities that make learning fun! Bianca believes that when a child has busy hands they will have busy brains. She can’t wait to continue these activities and build strategies they will use throughout their lives. Bianca is excited to spend time working with new skills they will be able to use as future engineers and builders!

Explore the Triangle (5-7)

It’s time for a field trip! We’re bringing back TDS’s original summer experience: Explore the Triangle! Our cities’ hands-on museums, natural beauty, history and family-friendly lifestyle offer a wide variety of field trips for every age group and interest. Maybe we’ll visit the RDU Observation Park to watch planes land and take off or enjoy walking across the zigzag bridge and playing on the grass beside the large garden pond at Duke Gardens. How about visiting some of our local museums and then discovering nearby parks? Join us on an adventure across the Triangle to revisit favorite places and discover some hidden gems.

Tiffany graduated with a Master’s in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this past school year she served as Kindergarten Assistant as well as After School Counselor and interim After School Director at TDS. In her free time Tiffany loves to read books like Harry Potter, watch Disney movies, and play Pokemon. She is looking forward to learning, playing, and growing with friends this Summer!

Passport Picnic (7-9)

Let’s take a trip from our kitchen to the world. Campers explore other cultures by making delicious recipes from around the globe, and we’ll learn a few words in a new language along the way! At the end of the week, each camper will have compiled a cookbook with all of their recipes. (All recipes will be vegetarian, and we will make two versions of some recipes to accommodate picky eaters.)

Rebecca Fensholt is a philosophy lecturer who also works as a substitute teacher at TDS. She loves hiking with her dogs, experimenting with cooking, teaching, and learning!

Artistic Voyages (7-9)

Travel the world by making, creating, and exploring art from all over the globe. We will discover many different mediums and techniques to create our masterpieces. Put on your captian’s hat as we set sail to India, Africa, Mexico and abroad through painting, drawing, and sculpture. We will end the week with a showcase for you to experience our artistic voyage together.

Kayla is excited to join the TDS summer team again! Kayla is currently the TK teacher assistant at TDS and is eager to extend the fun into the summer. Kayla is originally from Wyoming but moved to North Carolina while her husband attends Duke. She loves photography, art, hiking, and travel.

Mystery: Unlocked (8-12)

Instructor: Zachary Keesee
Ages: 8-12

Have you ever immersed yourself in a real-life adventure game full of intriguing puzzles and mind twisting clues? Now you have the opportunity to dive into five mind-blowing episodes that will challenge you in a unique way. Campers will solve mysteries based on a theme of the day by working together on logic puzzles. Even though these games and puzzles may be challenging, don’t fret, you’ll have fun!

Zachary is a Durham native and TDS lifer. He is currently attending NC State’s computer and electrical engineering program. Zachary loves spending his free time outdoors playing soccer, basketball and computer games.

Basketball Camp II (8-12)

Instructor: Steven Mercado
Ages: 8-12
Session: June 24-28

Price: $270
Our basketball camp is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to boys and girls in a safe and enjoyable environment, including through stations, drills, games, and competitions designed for kids of all skill levels. We will focus on getting kids comfortable on the court while improving basic motor skills such as jumping, running, and sliding.

Steven Mercado is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Bank Street College (M.Ed.).Steven is a second grade teacher and Middle School boys basketball assistant coach at TDS. He is eager to prepare our younger athletes for middle school and high school sports.
