Click on each workshop to find descriptions, teachers, and prices for each class. We look forward to providing your child a quality program focusing on fun and exploration. Please note that age ranges are listed next to each workshop title.
All workshop prices are for the week – Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended Day can be added on for an additional cost.

Dive Into Summer (4-5)

Instructor: Jordan Qualls

Who’s ready for summer? We are! Join us as we celebrate the first day of summer with our favorite treats, activities, and -most importantly- water play! Get to know your fellow camp peers as we embrace everything summer has to offer. We will have a fun week filled with making lemonade, counting watermelon seeds, drawing with sidewalk chalk, chillin’ outside with our shades on, and more!

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher, and now as a summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 9 and 11 years old.

Deep Space Sparkle (5-7)

Join Rose on an exploration of space in fun, creative and hands on ways. We’ll make sparkling projects that light up using circuits. We will create rockets and even blast one off to the skies! All this and more is waiting for you as we artistically and scientifically journey into space together.

Rose, one of our returning summer teachers, is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where she studied political science and music with the intention of teaching social studies in North Carolina. Currently, she teaches civics and government classes to upper elementary students. Rose truly enjoys working with this age group and helping them develop their creative thinking skills in the classroom. Rose’s calm, warm nature and passion for teaching gives her students a fun, inviting, and relaxing learning experience and environment. In her free time, Rose loves arts and crafts, creating with clay, and reading.

Backyard Adventures (5-7)

Instructor: Kyara Kimber

Let’s explore the amazing wilderness our backyard has to offer! We will hike nearby trails -including our beautiful Eno River, picnic at Duke Gardens, discover the wildlife and plants in our area, build forts and shelters to protect us from the elements, and more! Join Kyara on an amazing outdoor adventure!

Kyara Kimber has been part of the TDS community for three years as an after school counselor. A resident of Mebane, she is studying Criminal Justice and will be attending North Carolina Central University to further her degree this summer. Her goal is to share her passion and become a Criminal Justice professor. In her spare time Kyara likes to sing, play guitar, and help at risk youth in her community. She is eager to expand her role at TDS leading several camps this summer.

Explore the Triangle (7-9)

It’s time for a field trip! We’re bringing back TDS’s original summer experience: Explore the Triangle! Our cities’ hands-on museums, natural beauty, history and family-friendly lifestyle offer a wide variety of field trips for every age group and interest. Maybe we’ll visit the RDU Observation Park to watch planes land and take off or enjoy walking across the zigzag bridge and playing on the grass beside the large garden pond at Duke Gardens. How about visiting some of our local museums and then discovering nearby parks? Join us on an adventure across the Triangle to revisit favorite places and discover some hidden gems.

Bianca was born and raised in Durham, NC and is a second grade teacher at TDS. She is thrilled to be working with our future leaders this summer. She loves incorporating hands on activities that make learning fun! Bianca believes that when a child has busy hands they will have busy brains. She can’t wait to continue these activities and build strategies they will use throughout their lives. Bianca is excited to spend time working with new skills they will be able to use in the kitchen!

Sweet & Savory Summer Cooking Camp (7-9)

Start the summer off with fun and exciting summer recipes. We will learn sensational skills and techniques that you can bring into the kitchen at home. Let’s make refreshing smoothies, homemade pizza, and, of course, s’mores! You will take home a recipe book to guide your cooking endeavors. Show your parents a sweet and savory thing or two!

Kayla is excited to join the TDS summer team again! She is currently the TK teacher assistant at TDS and is eager to extend the fun into the summer. Kayla is originally from Wyoming but moved to North Carolina while her husband attends Duke. She loves photography, hiking, and travel.

Extreme STEAM (8-12)

Instructor: Rebecca Fensholt
Ages: 8-12

Welcome Extreme STEAMers! You will generate your own ideas and projects, can choose to work in teams and independently, and participate in daily design challenges. Some activities will include Genius Hour, maker space, and much more! Each day you will bring home new experiences that you can use for the rest of your life! We will choose themes for our projects as a group based on your passions and interest. Time to put our imaginations, creativity, and experience to work!

Rebecca Fensholt is a philosophy lecturer who also works as a substitute teacher at TDS. She loves hiking with her dogs, experimenting with cooking, teaching, and learning!

Basketball Camp I (8-12)

Instructor: Steven Mercado
Ages: 8-12
Session: June 17-21

Price: $270
Our basketball camp is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to boys and girls in a safe and enjoyable environment, including through stations, drills, games, and competitions designed for kids of all skill levels. We will focus on getting kids comfortable on the court while improving basic motor skills such as jumping, running, and sliding.

Steven Mercado is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Bank Street College (M.Ed.).Steven is a second grade teacher and Middle School boys basketball assistant coach at TDS. He is eager to prepare our younger athletes for middle school and high school sports.
