Does your little one enjoy fighting crime in his/her spare time? Superheroes camp is the place for them! In this camp we will talk about some of the superheroes that we know and love: Superman, Flash, Black Panther, Captain America, and Spiderman. Your child will have a chance to discuss his/her favorite superhero and come up with a crime-fighting alias of his/her own! Together, we will keep camp TDS safe from danger all week as we work together to complete missions and stop villains!

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher, and now as a summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 10 and 12 years old.

Ever wonder what lies beyond the stars? In this fun filled camp we will learn about all things outer space! Each day we will be focusing on a different facet of our galaxy. We will be reading books, making crafts, and discovering the universe all week long. Please come and join us in our intergalactic adventure!

Tiffany Philbeck has been a part of the TDS community for the past 5 years. During this time she served as after school counselor. Two years ago she started full time as Kindergarten Assistant. She also participated as a summer camp counselor last summer, leading 3 camps of different age ranges. In her free time she enjoys reading, painting, and playing Pokemon. Do you ever wonder what’s in the woods, across the pond, or in the trees? Together we will explore the great outdoors that we find right here in the city. Join us at Duke Gardens, the Al Buehler Trail, the Eno River, and other local gems as we explore and enjoy the beauty within the nature that is right outside our own backyards.

Lizzie has been the Lower School Spanish teacher at TDS for the past two years. Her favorite outdoor activities are skiing, running, biking, and backpacking. If there’s anything that Lizzie loves more than being outside, it is being outside with her students and sparking their love of the outdoors!

Want to brush up your colorful and artistic side? We will explore the world of both two and three dimensional media, using pencil, colored pencil, acrylic paint, clay, and more. Anna will provide step-by-step instruction that allows you to see projects take shape from beginning to end. You will create at least one drawing and a painting on canvas. Each day will have a different theme, usually inspired by a famous  artist or style.

Anna Rogers has been teaching for 15 years in Early Childhood Education. She currently leads the PreK at The Lerner School in Durham. She enjoys the day to day challenges that comes when working with young eager minds. She has lived in the triangle area since 2006. In her spare time, Anna enjoys going on hikes with her daughters, cooking, and watching Carolina basketball.

Join us for a week of photography fun! Let’s explore the basics of photography: everything from camera settings to composition. We will participate in fun challenges while discovering the various styles of photography. We recommend that you bring a personal camera due to a limited supply of cameras that would be shared by campers.

Paul McAllister has been a science teacher for ten years. He is currently in his fifth year of teaching 8th grade science at Ravenscroft in Raleigh. In his spare time, he loves running, photography, hiking, and camping.

Our basketball camp is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of basketball to boys and girls in a safe and enjoyable environment, including through stations, drills, games, and competitions designed for kids of all skill levels. We will focus on getting kids comfortable on the court while improving basic motor skills such as jumping, running, and sliding. Players’ endurance, strength and knowledge of the game will improve through the week at camp.

Coach Steven Mercado is from Brooklyn, NY. He got his Bachelor’s Degree from Gettysburg College and his Master’s Degree from Bank Street College. He played organized basketball throughout his school career. Steven has 7 years of coaching and teaching experience that ranges from preschool to high school.

Do you have a creative kiddo who loves to make, create, and build with everything in the house? Bring them to play with magnets, screws, legos, and more! We will use our imagination to create things in new ways. Your child will make a new house for the three little pigs, learn to use tools, and more. We will enjoy designing and destroying structures using blocks, cups, Legos, and jumbo marshmallows. Your child will engage in problem solving activities with peers along with other activities such as building his/her name with various materials.

Join us in a week of zoology exploration, from insects and reptiles to birds and mammals! Each day, we will discover Durham’s native creatures! We may even venture to one of Durham’s local animal sanctuaries, like the Piedmont Wildlife Center or the Duke Lemur Center. At the end of the week, campers will work together to compile a kid-cyclopedia of local biological life.

LEGO® enthusiasts unite! In this workshop we will use our creativity to complete daily challenges, as well as build various LEGO® creations. Your child will be introduced to beginning concepts in engineering and architecture, what shapes are the strongest to build with, and gain valuable teamwork skills with their classmates.Maybe we’ll create a town, construct a marble run, engineer with LEGO® and water, or build something that interests you. There’s no right or wrong, only fun!

Bianca was born and raised in Durham, NC and is a second grade teacher at TDS. She is thrilled to be working with our future leaders this summer. Dive deep into everything USA with our Stars & Stripes camp! We will learn about the Fourth of July, the American flag, pride, and of course, fireworks. Learn and sing patriotic songs and create red, white, and blue crafts, like shaving cream fireworks, flag paintings, and Fourth of July crowns. To celebrate our patriotic week, camper-made crafts and decorations will be on display at our Independence Day parade.

Morgan Whithaus is entering her third summer working for TDS Summer Programs, and she is looking forward to serving as a workshop instructor and administrative assistant again this year. Morgan graduated from UNC-CH with her Bachelor of Arts in Education. She will be returning to UNC in the fall to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a focus on elementary education. During this past school year, she worked as the STORM Lab technology assistant, so Morgan is excited to continue working with TDS students and their friends this summer during the Stars & Stripes and Mini-Meteorologists camps.

Jenny specialized in literacy development and earned a PhD from the University of Virginia and is currently a third grade teacher at TDS. Join Minecraft friends on missions created by our lead instructor, such as designing a fairytale setting or making mazes for friends. Players will explore and build across vast landscapes of mountains, forests, caves, and various biomes. Characters will hunt, sail, and farm while constructing homes and objects by breaking and placing textured cubes in a 3D world. We will use our creativity and have limitless opportunity to build, discover, and problem-solve in the world of Minecraft.

Clayton is in his fifth year of teaching with his third year as a Middle School Social Studies teacher at TDS. He earned his BA from the University of Oregon. Clayton is excited to be part of the Summer Programs this year. You’ll find him leading LEGO Challenges and Minecraft workshops.

Bailey Allgood is at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a B.A.Ed as a Human Development and Family Studies major. Next year, she plans to complete the Master’s of Arts in Teaching in Elementary and Special Education at UNC. Bailey is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow who believes in the vital role of a teacher. While her primary focus is general education, she is thrilled about the opportunity to use her background in music to lead music camps. Bailey is very excited for her first summer with TDS!

This week, you will practice essential kitchen skills and master the fundamentals of cooking. You will follow recipes, how to properly handle food, discover what ingredients work well together, use your creativity and imagination, create a recipe book and more. Kids work alongside classmates to learn knife skills, measuring and baking, making a pasta dish among other things. Come join What’s Cookin’ to develop your confidence in cooking!

Bianca was born and raised in Durham, NC and is a second grade teacher at TDS. She is thrilled to be working with our future leaders this summer. She loves incorporating hands on activities that make learning fun! Bianca believes that when a child has busy hands they will have busy brains. She can’t wait to continue these activities and build strategies they will use throughout their lives. Bianca is excited to spend time working with new skills they will be able to use as future engineers and builders!

Join us for a week of science, sustainability, and a whole lot of fun! Our week will be full of activities such as building wind-powered cars, experimenting with ways to clean up an oil spill, determining which candies are most impervious to erosion, and more. We’ll even take a field trip to learn about local sustainability efforts from community leaders while taking an upcycling art class at The Scrap Exchange, eating lunch at Pompieri Pizza, and picking up dessert from the East Durham Bake Shop!

Rebecca Fensholt has taught philosophy for five years and has worked as a substitute teacher at TDS for two years. She loves hiking, camping, reading, cooking, and spending time with her three dogs!

Ages 8-12 Graphic Novelists

Boom! Pow! Woosh! Come ready to explore the amazing genre of graphic novels and comic books! In this workshop, you will explore and discover the components of storytelling through graphic novel art and creative writing. We’ll brainstorm, storyboard, outline, develop a style, write, and draw to create our own graphic novels! You can prepare for this camp by thinking about your characters and plot prior to the first day of camp (not required).

Samantha Lazar is a veteran teacher who loves games, puzzles, and creative writing. She teaches 5th grade at TDS and she cannot wait to have fun at TDS Summer!

Calling all tiny tornadoes! Join Morgan Whithaus for a week full of weather discovery and exploration as mini-meteorologists. We will read stories, including Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco and Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin as inspiration for our weather-related experiments, crafts, snacks, and other activities. Together, we will create, direct, and present a forecast video highlighting our new meteorology skills. In celebration of “rain day,” we may travel to a local sprayground or enjoy a water day on campus.

Morgan Whithaus is entering her third summer working for TDS Summer Programs, and she is looking forward to serving as a workshop instructor and administrative assistant again this year. Morgan graduated from UNC-CH with her Bachelor of Arts in Education. She will be returning to UNC in the fall to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a focus on elementary education. During this past school year, she worked as the STORM Lab technology assistant, so Morgan is excited to continue working with TDS students and their friends this summer during the Stars & Stripes and Mini-Meteorologists camps.

Let’s make some music! At Music Makers, everyone can be a musician. Come ready to sing and play as we learn about various instruments, tempo, and basic rhythm. Challenge your creative side by experimenting with materials and discovering different ways to make music! Campers will work together to compose and perform their own musical creations using their unique techniques. No music experience is required, so come ready to make some noise!

Bailey Allgood is at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a B.A.Ed as a Human Development and Family Studies major. Next year, she plans to complete the Master’s of Arts in Teaching in Elementary and Special Education at UNC. Bailey is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow who believes in the vital role of a teacher. While her primary focus is general education, she is thrilled about the opportunity to use her background in music to lead music camps. Bailey is very excited for her first summer with TDS!

What could be more fun than building with blocks? Building with BIG blocks! In this camp, your child will enjoy designing and destroying towers using big blocks, cups, big Legos, and jumbo marshmallows. We will build and test bridges and compete in friendly competitions to see which designs can hold toy boats, cars, people, and more. Your child will engage in problem solving activities with peers along with other activities such as building a boat with everyday materials.

Abbie has been leading and learning with children for over twenty years. Abbie is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She is a K-6 Certified North Carolina Educator with a wide variety of teaching experience in public and private schools, local day camps, and overnight camp. She has served as a camp administrator, specialist, and group leader. She enjoys spending time with her family, baking, cooking, arts and crafts, being with animals, and taking long walks. Abbie is excited to join the TDS camp staff!

Let’s get messy! In this camp we will be focusing on paper mache. Together we will explore what is needed to shape a base, how to create paper mache paste, and the best practices in applying paper mache. Once our projects have dried and set it’s time to paint! We will learn about color theory and how to create different colors by mixing paints. By the end of the week we will have solely student created works of art to share with you. Please join us in this art-rageous adventure!

Come Race your way through a week of challenges and adventure! Similar to the TV show, we will split our group into pairs and participate in physical and mental challenges, including crafts, obstacle courses, puzzles, and more. The teacher guides you through the series of fun, age-appropriate activities, so don’t fret. None of these challenges will be impossible to complete. These puzzles are organized at a variety of locations around campus, so get ready to move around! Our goal is to challenge you, exercise resilience, and practice teamwork and patience. Monday through Thursday campers will practice different activities to prepare for the main “race” on Friday.

Does your child love experimenting, yucky stuff, and getting a bit messy? Grossology will take students on a yucky adventure through the human body, our natural world, and in the lab! Beware, your child will be bringing home icky creations. Each day, students will get to try out a different science experiment themselves, learn how it works, and get to use their imagination and creativity in the process. Anna Rogers has been teaching for 15 years in Early Childhood Education. She currently leads the PreK at The Lerner School in Durham. She enjoys the day to day challenges that comes when working with young eager minds. She has lived in the triangle area since 2006. In her spare time, Anna enjoys going on hikes with her daughters, cooking, and watching Carolina basketball.

Take your blanket fort building skills to the next level! We will explore using recycled and natural materials and discover what type of knot is the best to build forts and hideouts. We’ll discover structural integrity in the classroom with hands on activities and then take our skills into the wild. A field trip into nearby wooded parks will put our fort building to the test.

Gather your lei, favorite Hawaiian shirt, and your best smile! We’re learning all about the world’s happiest instrument: the ukulele. In this introductory course, students will learn the cultural history and anatomy of the ukulele. Even better, they will learn to play it! This instrument is a great starting place for young children interested in music. The size and composition of the ukulele makes it approachable for elementary-age students. By the end of the week, campers will have knowledge of basic ukulele skills, including proper posture, chords, and strumming. No experience is required, but please come with an eagerness to learn!

Don’t you wish you could make yourself exactly what you want for every meal? Let’s put aside the chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, or stop saying “not again” to what our parents make and dive into all of our kitchen’s possibilities ourselves! We’ll have fun, try to eat healthy, develop or hone our cooking skills, experiment in the kitchen, improve math and reading skills .. all in an engaging way, while expanding our culinary palates. Some of the activities included are: cooking, baking, outdoor play, arts & crafts and much more.

Amie Tedeschi is a fourth grade teacher at Triangle Day School. She enjoys both cooking and baking, especially her “famous” chocolate chip cookies. She loves cake decorating, collecting recipes, and exploring new cuisines. When she’s not in the kitchen, Ms. T. also likes reading, traveling, crafting, and singing. She’s looking forward to a sharing her favorite recipes and techniques this summer and learning from her students as well!

Robot Wranglers, let’s design robots and conquer challenges, including those from this past year’s First LEGO League. Our program is built around the EV3 Mindstorm Education Set. Explore the boundless world of mechanical creation and design with drag-and-drop visual coding. You’ll get immersed in an environment that encourages teamwork, friendship, and creativity while problem solving and discovering strategies to tackle challenges.

Clayton is in his fifth year of teaching with his third year as a Middle School Social Studies teacher at TDS. He earned a BA from the University of Oregon. Clayton is excited to be part of the Summer Programs this year. You’ll find him leading Minecraft and LEGO Robotics workshops.

LEGO® enthusiasts unite! In this workshop we will use our creativity to complete daily challenges, as well as build various LEGO® creations. Your child will be introduced to beginning concepts in engineering and architecture, what shapes are the strongest to build with, and gain valuable teamwork skills with their classmates.Maybe we’ll create a town, construct a marble run, engineer with LEGO® and water, or build something that interests you. Tumble, Tumble, Tumble!! Come join us for a fun-filled week of tumbling and movement. We will work on improving your flips, tumbles, flexibility, and body movement. This is a relaxed camp where you can come in and work on perfection of skills through repetition. We may venture to Bull City Gymnastics for more skill building. All levels are welcome.

Ages 9-12 Minecraft & Makers

Join Minecraft friends on missions created by our lead instructor, such as designing a fairytale setting or making mazes for friends. Players will explore and build across vast landscapes of mountains, forests, caves, and various biomes. Characters will hunt, sail, and farm while constructing homes and objects by breaking and placing textured cubes in a 3D world. We will use our creativity and have limitless opportunity to build, discover, and problem-solve in the world of Minecraft.

Zachary, a Durham native and TDS lifer, is in his third summer of leading our Minecraft camp. He is currently attending NC State’s computer and electrical engineering program. Zachary loves spending his free time outdoors playing soccer, basketball and computer games.
