Do you enjoy using your creativity to make, create, and build with objects around the house? Join us on a building adventure while we play with magnets, screws, legos, and more! Use your imagination to create things in new ways. We may make a new house for the three little pigs, learn to use tools, and more. Let’s design and destroy structures using blocks, cups, Legos, and jumbo marshmallows. We will practice problem solving with our friends along with other activities such as building his/her name with various materials.

Jordan, a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, relocated to Durham, NC in 2003. She taught preschool for 3.5 years after graduating from NCCU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Jordan is thrilled to be part of the TDS community as a lead kindergarten teacher and summer early childhood teacher! Outside of school, Jordan loves to sing and dance, play with her dog Coco, and spend time with her little sisters, who are 11 and 13 years old.

Let’s explore, tinker, and play to build and design an imaginative world within our own physical space. We’ll design costumes, create backdrops, read, act out our favorite stories or even our own made-up ones. We will create our own inventions and figure out how the will help the world around us. Join us in a week of zoology exploration, from insects and reptiles to birds and mammals! Each day, we will discover Durham’s native creatures! At the end of the week, campers will work together to compile a kid-cyclopedia of local biological life.

All creative kids are invited to take part in this art explosion! From painting to drawing to sculpting and everything in between, students explore different kinds of art media and make beautiful creations to treasure. At the end of the week, final masterpieces will be on display at our very own “art gallery” for others to admire. I can’t wait to see your talent!

Julie is a first grade teacher at TDS, and she is originally from Rome, Georgia. Besides teaching first graders, she also teaches art part-time for all ages of kids and does painting commissions for the holidays. She loves to do anything artistic and learn new skills. She also enjoys spending time outside (when it’s warm!), reading books, and exploring new places with her husband and two dogs. Julie’s favorite season is summer, and when the seasons change, she is a huge fan of University of Georgia football! Julie has enjoyed being involved with TDS Summer Camps for the past 2 summers and looks forward to teaching again this summer!

Calling all game enthusiasts! In the spirit of capturing the exuberance of spending hours in the backyard with friends playing games, we proudly present Backyard Games! Horse Shoes, Kan Jam (a team oriented frisbee game), Bocce Ball, and Corn Hole. These are just a few examples of games we will play over the course of the week, while making new friends and honing our sportsmanship.

Josh is a Social Studies teacher returning for his 3rd year at TDS. While studying in Boulder, Colorado, Josh developed a passion for all things outdoors. His passion for nature manifests itself in a litany of activities including hiking, biking, climbing, running, and really anything that involves being outside. Josh’s two Weimaraner’s, Jack and Zellie, very much appreciate his desire to hit the trails. Growing up in Kentucky, Josh was a camp counselor for multiple seasons and he hopes to pass on that same summer excitement to each of the camps he’ll be leading.

This week, you will practice essential kitchen skills and master the fundamentals of cooking. You will follow recipes, how to properly
handle food, discover what ingredients work well together, use your creativity and imagination, create a recipe book and more. Kids
work alongside classmates, while socially distanced, to learn knife skills, measuring and baking, making a pasta dish among other things. Come join us and find out What’s Cookin’ to develop your confidence in cooking!

Bianca was born and raised in Durham, NC and teaches second grade at TDS. She is thrilled to be working with our future leaders this summer. She loves incorporating hands-on activities that make learning fun! Bianca believes that when a child has busy hands they will have busy brains. She can’t wait to continue these activities and build strategies they will use throughout their lives. Bianca is excited to spend time working with new skills they will be able to use as future nutritionists and chefs!

Join Minecraft friends on missions created by our lead instructor, such as designing a fairytale setting or making mazes for friends. Players will explore and build across vast landscapes of mountains, forests, caves, and various biomes. Characters will hunt, sail, and farm while constructing homes and objects by breaking and placing textured cubes in a 3D world. We will use our creativity and have limitless opportunity to build, discover, and problem-solve in the world of Minecraft.

Drew joined the TDS staff summer of 2020 as the Technology Assistant. Currently attending ECU on an Industrial Technology track, Drew enjoys taking things apart and understanding their functions. He enjoys problem solving and challenging tasks, and believes that children should exercise these skills. This summer he will lead Minecraft and Robotics in fun and engaging ways.

Coach Mercado emphasizes personal skill development, sportsmanship, and a focus on fundamentals for all levels. Daily exercises and training include offense/defense skill building, ball handling, shooting, and rebounding. Coach Mercado uses his creativity to offer a safe, yet fun and engaging program providing challenges and competitions during the pandemic.

Coach Steven Mercado is from Brooklyn, NY. He got his Bachelor’s Degree from Gettysburg College and his Master’s Degree from Bank Street College. He played organized basketball throughout his school career. Currently one of our very own second grade teachers, Steven also has 8 years of coaching and teaching experience that ranges from preschool to high school.

Encourage your originality and artistic fancy with Anime drawings. Let’s explore various drawing techniques and characterized anatomy skills through the Japanese comic style of Manga and Anime. Mrs. Lucas enjoys being the art teacher at Triangle Day School for 2nd through 8th grades. She has taught art at TDS for over 20 years! Her passion for art extends into her private life. She loves creating acrylic paintings, often of whimsical animals. She’s proud to have her paintings displayed at the restaurants, Harvest 18 and Blue Corn Cafe.

Ever wonder what lies beyond the stars? In this fun filled camp we will learn about all things outer space! Each day we will be focusing on a different facet of our galaxy. We will be reading books, making crafts, and discovering the universe all week long. Come and join us on our intergalactic adventure!

Tiffany Philbeck has been a part of the TDS community for the past 6 years. During this time she served as after school counselor, kindergarten assistant, and has transitioned into the classroom as a 4th grade teacher. She also participated as a summer camp counselor for the last two summers, leading camps of all different age ranges. In her free time she enjoys reading, painting, and playing her Nintendo Switch. Does your child love experimenting, yucky stuff, and getting a bit messy? Grossology will take students on a yucky adventure through the human body, our natural world, and in the lab! LEGO® enthusiasts unite! In this workshop we will use our creativity to complete daily challenges, as well as build various LEGO® creations. Let’s introduce ourselves to beginning concepts in engineering and architecture, what shapes are the strongest to build with, and gain valuable teamwork skills with classmates. We’ll use Ozobots to navigate through LEGO challenges, like driving through a class-made town. Maybe we’ll also construct a marble run, engineer with LEGO® and water, or build something that interests you.

Interested in learning about or polishing up your outdoor skills? During this camp we will learn how to put up a tent, construct a basic survival shelter, how to prepare and pack for a backpacking trip, different methods of building a camp-fire for specific purposes, and learn about local areas that are well suited for outdoor adventures.

Exclusively for girls! Let’s explore our potential with physical activity while developing and strengthening important life skills as girls in this world. We will engage in team-building exercises to strengthen our leadership skills while making new friends. Our focus is physical and emotional growth while embracing our individuality. We’ll go for runs together, build forts, play games (both indoor and outdoor), and encourage each other along the way. Let’s show the world that She’s Got Game!

This is Kirsten’s second year of TDS Summer Programs but she is not new to the summer camp circuit! Having counseled and directed outdoor camps in NY, she is excited to be a part of this summer’s team. Kirsten loves inspiring youth to lead an active life and have fun while doing it. She believes if you do what you love, your life will be full and she loves spending time in her kitchen learning new cooking techniques, running through the mountain trails with her daughter and their dog (until she gets too tired and refuses to budge – the dog, that is!), waking up early enough to watch the sunrise and taking spontaneous trips to wherever looks interesting. Kirsten is looking forward to inspiring TDS campers to try something new, both physically and in the kitchen.

Robot Wranglers, let’s design robots and conquer challenges, including those from this past year’s First LEGO League. Our program is built around the EV3 Mindstorm Education Set. Let’s celebrate our most beloved picture book authors! Discover the large creepy crawlers cut from paper of vivid colors created by Eric Carle. Or maybe explore the fantastical world of Dr. Seuss’s stories. These are two of the authors who have stolen the imaginations of millions of kids through their novels, poetry, and stories. In this camp, we will delve into the world of favorite authors and illustrators, like Shel Silverstein and Maurice Sendak. We will explore our favorite authors through games, art, baking, and more!

Let’s make some music! At Music Makers, everyone can be a musician. Come ready to sing and play as we learn about various

Bailey Queen is returning for her second summer with TDS! She is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in May of 2020. She is currently completing her Master of Arts in Teaching at UNC-CH in Elementary and Special Education. Bailey is a North Carolina Teaching Fellow who believes in the vital role of a teacher. While her primary focus is general education, she is thrilled about the opportunity to use her background in music to lead music camps such as Ukulele for All, Music Makers, and Musical Artists.

Let’s combine LEGOs, clay, and other materials of your choice in a stop motion animation experience! Learn about the creative process, and maybe show our stop motion viewers how to dunk a basketball, golf a hole in one, make your mini figures talk, and so much more! This camp will give you the basic skills needed to animate your own stop motion videos at home.

Clayton is in his sixth year of teaching with his fourth year as a Middle School Social Studies teacher at TDS. He earned his BA from the University of Oregon. Clayton is excited to be part of the Summer Programs this year. You’ll find him leading Robotics, STEAM, Stop Motion, and Coding workshops.

Tiffany Philbeck has been a part of the TDS community for the past 6 years. During this time she served as after school counselor, kindergarten assistant, and has transitioned into the classroom as a 4th grade teacher. She also participated as a summer camp counselor for the last two summers, leading camps of all different age ranges. In her free time she enjoys reading, painting, and playing her Nintendo Switch. TDS would like to provide students with an opportunity to review concepts and skills for next grade level preparation in a fun way. Rising Tornados workshops are 3 hours of academic engagement, including literacy and math activities tailored to your student’s needs. This will be a full day workshop with half of the day dedicated to academic learning, while the other half is geared toward various activities, such as movement, arts, music, free play, STEAM, and teacher’s choice.

Julie is a first grade teacher at TDS, and she is originally from Rome, Georgia. Besides teaching first graders, she also teaches art part-time for all ages of kids and does painting commissions for the holidays. She loves to do anything artistic and learn new skills. She also enjoys spending time outside (when it’s warm!), reading books, and exploring new places with her husband and two dogs. Julie’s favorite season is summer, and when the seasons change, she is a huge fan of University of Georgia football! Julie has enjoyed being involved with TDS Summer Camps for the past 2 summers and looks forward to teaching again this summer!

Gather your lei, favorite Hawaiian shirt, and your best smile! We’re learning all about the world’s happiest instrument: the ukulele.
In this introductory course, we will learn the cultural history and anatomy of the ukulele. Even better, they will learn to play it! This instrument is a great starting place for young children interested in music. The size and composition of the ukulele makes it
approachable for elementary-age students. By the end of the week, campers will have knowledge of basic ukulele skills, including
proper posture, chords, and strumming. No experience is required, but please come with an eagerness to learn!

Calling all tiny tornadoes! Join TDS for a week full of weather discovery and exploration as mini-meteorologists. We will read stories, including Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco and Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin as inspiration for our weather-related experiments, crafts, snacks, and other activities. Together, we will create, direct, and present a forecast video highlighting our new meteorology skills. In celebration of “rain day,” we may enjoy a water day on campus.

Suzanna Hernandez is a language educator that has experience teaching a wide range of ages. She is a parent of two TDS students (TK & 3rd), is a frequent volunteer at TDS, and loves being a part of the TDS community. Suzanna enjoys spending time with family and friends, likes to camp and build campfires, and can often be found with Arthur, her dog, wrangling the family’s flock of chickens.

Jonathan Dowd has been teaching Spanish and coaching soccer at Triangle Day School for 13 years. At TDS he has worn many hats over the years from Athletic Director to Drama teacher. Currently along with Jonathan’s teaching duties he enjoys coaching the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams as well as the co-ed Ultimate. In his free time he enjoys gardening, running, cooking and travel. Most recently, in 2020 he took a group of 43 students and parents to the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.

Let’s spend the week exploring the possibilities of recycled materials and other people’s discarded items that we repurpose into useful creations. Join Minecraft friends on missions created by our lead instructor, such as designing a fairytale setting or making mazes for friends. We will use our creativity and have limitless opportunity to build, discover, and problem-solve in the world of Minecraft.
