Ms. Stewart planned a series of lessons for the middle school advisories about neurodiversity. The students explored what neurodiversity is and discussed some thought-provoking and important questions:

  • Do you think our school and/or society does an adequate job of embracing neurodiversity?
  • How do you think having an “invisible difference” like a learning difference compares to being visibly different?
  • How does our classroom, community, and society as a whole benefit from neurodiversity?

Throughout their advisories, middle schoolers discussed their own challenges and strengths, and how we can work to make sure that we recognize and respect that we all think, feel, process, and communicate differently.

The students also explored their own unique learning styles, investigating how they best learn and retain information. These conversations are especially important as students become more independent in middle school and learn to advocate for themselves and what they need in order to be successful.
